A Real Thanksgiving

DAY 2 OF 5

Serving to See the Blessings

When I was younger, working in advertising in São Paulo, Brazil, I used to complain all the time. I felt I was not being recognized, that I was not earning enough, that my car was not good enough, and many other small things that now seem foolish. One day, a friend of mine named Ricardinho told me I should volunteer to serve food to the homeless. I had never done that before. I had worked on campaigns to fight hunger, but I had never served directly.

His church group organized meals, and we helped distribute them and talk to people in need. That night changed me. I met people who had nothing but were still thankful for a meal, a blanket, a place to rest, or simply for being alive. I realized how blind I had been to the blessings God had placed in my own life.

“Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” (Proverbs 11:25)

That experience made me happier and more grateful. I started to see how much God had done for me even when I was not paying attention. Serving others saved me from my own discontent. It reminded me that every act of kindness opens our eyes to the abundance we already have. Serving people is one of the best ways to discover the blessings in your own life.
