God's Purposes in Motherhood

DAY 2 OF 5

Luke 8:15
But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop (NVI).

SEEDS
I really like the Parable of the Sower. It enriches our understanding of the different facets of the human heart, which is the soil where the Word of the Lord is sown. In the examples Jesus used, it was said that everyone heard the Word of God. Many hear the Word of God, but only a few hold on to it and bear fruit.

It is not a surprise to us that we are examples to our children - both for what is good and what is bad. What we say, how we act, and how we react are seeds planted in their little hearts. Every day, we have the opportunity to sow good seeds, especially the seed of God’s word. The Bible commands us to speak of God's Word at all times (Deuteronomy 6:7-9). God's Word is the most important seed to be planted in the soil of our children's hearts, but the act of sowing this precious seed carries a responsibility just as important: the responsibility of being an example of what we speak and teach about God and His Word.

When our actions align with what we say, the chances of these seeds finding “good soil” in our children’s hearts are greatly increased. The example we carry will make our teaching take root in their hearts, and the result will be fruitfulness - for the glory of the Lord.
Therefore, we have both the task of sowing the seed of God’s Word and of being an example of what God’s Word teaches.

From another perspective, if we, as mothers, hear the Word of the Lord and allow it to shape and transform us into the image of our Savior, if we let our hearts be teachable, if we readily recognize when we are wrong and turn to Christ - these actions will be like good seeds in our children's hearts. One day, they will understand our humanity, our fragility, and our dependence on God.

A very practical example is when, moved by frustration or anger, we end up losing patience with our children. Due to our humanity, we are not immune to making mistakes, but if we allow ourselves to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit, we will be more likely to recognize our sin and ask our children for forgiveness. The feeling they get when we ask for forgiveness leaves a deeper mark in their hearts than the negative feeling caused by our failure.

The Word of God is also effective when, even though we are tired or frustrated by a situation, we don’t allow these emotions to control us, but instead act with love and firmness in raising our children.

To put this into practice is much harder than writing or talking about it, but it makes us more dependent on God in our daily pursuit to be an example of Christ in our children's lives.
