Learning How God Speaks

DAY 2 OF 3

One thing I have come to discover is that every time I have obeyed a prompting from the Lord, I have grown more sensitive to His leading in everyday areas of my life. And I believe this stands true for many people. Obedience has a way of sharpening our hearing like nothing else. However, when we put off what He says or try to obey halfway, it gets easier to ignore Him next time. That’s what happened to Saul. His hesitation in obedience affected his ability to discern, and this is exactly what the Bible tells us to steer clear of. Instead, it encourages us to not just hear the Word of God but to act upon it (James 1:22). If you sense you have not heard God's direction or voice in a long time, maybe ask yourself what the last thing you heard Him tell you was and if you obeyed until completion.

The truth is that obedience rarely feels convenient for us. God may ask you to let go of pride, change your plans, or take a step that feels scary. Despite what the Lord may be calling you to do in this season, remember that He made it clear by saying, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). Following Him will always require action on our end. Hearing is only the first step.

Still, it's also important to remember that obedience is not reckless. The Lord's voice will always align with the Bible and will bring peace to your spirit. Often, it will also push you toward something your flesh resists. That’s why Paul said that it was those who were led by the Spirit who were sons of God (Romans 8:14). It's one thing to hear Him, but it is another to choose to follow His lead. Being led means trusting His tug even before the whole picture makes sense.

Today’s Challenge: Act on one small prompting from God today. Whether it’s forgiving someone, encouraging a friend, or stepping out in faith, don’t delay.

Let’s Pray: Lord, give me courage to obey You quickly. Sharpen my hearing, and teach me to trust that every step of obedience draws me closer to You.

About this Plan

Learning How God Speaks

Hearing God isn’t about complicated formulas or lofty experiences. It’s about a Father who longs to be close to His children and a Shepherd who knows how to guide His sheep. In this reading plan, you'll learn that it is less about striving and more about learning to recognize the ways He speaks. He isn’t far away. He’s present, faithful, and speaking to us more than we realize.
