Making Room at the Table
When was the last time you felt truly welcomed—not just tolerated, but embraced? That’s the kind of space Jesus created whenever he sat at a table.
As we continue this Table Talk journey, let’s look at another truth: the table is where everyone is invited. In the gospels, Jesus was constantly criticised for who he chose to eat with. He welcomed tax collectors, sinners, and people society had written off. To share a table in his culture was more than politeness; it was a statement of worth.
In Matthew 9, Jesus shares a meal at Matthew’s house with tax collectors and others considered outsiders. When criticized, he explained that just as a doctor is needed for the sick, so he came for those in need. His table was a place of healing and inclusion.
This challenges us. Who gets a seat at our tables? It’s easy to eat with those who look, think, and believe like us. But Jesus calls us to stretch further, to see our tables as places where the overlooked and the excluded can encounter love and dignity.
The table also teaches us humility. Sharing food side by side removes titles and hierarchies. Everyone eats the same meal, everyone has a place, and everyone is heard. It reminds us of God’s heart: that his kingdom is for all, not just a select few.
Revelation gives us a picture of the ultimate banquet—people from every tribe, language, and nation gathered around the Lamb. Every meal we share with others becomes a small rehearsal for that day.
So this week, think about your own table—whether it’s your dining room, a café table, or a park bench. Who might God be asking you to make room for? Who needs to hear: “You belong here”?
Prayer: Lord, open my heart to see others the way you see them. Help me create tables where people feel welcomed, valued, and loved.
Invite someone this week who might not usually get an invitation—whether it’s a neighbour, a colleague, or someone new at church.
About this Plan

Jesus shows up at the table — in the middle of real conversations, doubts, and everyday moments. When we slow down, share a meal, and open our hearts, God can bring healing, clarity, and fresh perspective. Let’s make our tables places of connection and hope, where faith feels alive and everyone has a seat.
