Keep Running The Race

I had a really embarrassing moment at the gym a few years ago. I was new to cardio training and a little insecure about my fitness levels. Despite having a great induction with a personal trainer, I remained unsure about how fast I should be going on the treadmill. I started well, listening to my favourite tunes and picking up pace. But as I hit the 9mph mark, I made the mistake of looking over at my neighbour’s screen to see how they were doing. I was so distracted by their pace that I almost wobbled off the treadmill entirely. I only just managed to hit the stop button and slow myself down before I hit the floor.

The Holy Spirit taught me a valuable lesson in that moment: when running your race, it’s crucial to keep looking ahead. Focus on your own metaphorical treadmill screen – your own race. Failure to do so because of insecurity or comparison will only slow you down or trip you up.

Scripture tells us to run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Forget about your sister's record time or your brother's trophies. Fix your eyes on Jesus, knowing He has planned a very specific route for you. Your commute, your daily dog walk, the weekly shop, the very life He has given you – these are where you need to be, and God sets the perfect timing for you to approach every hill, valley, corner, and milestone. Trust Him today and press on!

Prayer:

Lord, I trust You with my story. I know You have plans to prosper and not to harm me, to give me a hope and a future. I trust that You can use the season I’m in and the work of my hands to build Your Kingdom and make a positive difference. Help me to let go of the former things and press on towards the goals You have in mind. I want to serve You in the everyday, ordinary things as well as the mountain-top moments. Lord, I know that You’re my ultimate prize. May it all be for Your glory, Jesus! Amen.
