Overcoming Spiritual Depression: Martyn Lloyd-Jonesનમૂનો

This Day-1 devotion is adapted from Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones sermon "General Considerations on Spiritual Depression"
Understanding Spiritual Depression
The Psalmist's haunting question resonates with many believers: "Why are you cast down, O my soul?" Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones notes that spiritual depression—a state of persistent unhappiness and heaviness of spirit—is a reality many Christians face.
A depressed Christian is not a contradiction in terms. Throughout Scripture, we see faithful believers who struggled with despair—David, Elijah, Jeremiah, and even the apostle Paul who was "perplexed but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8).
Dr. Lloyd-Jones wisely observed that our temperaments play a significant role. The introspective person may overthink their spiritual state, while the extrovert might rush through spiritual disciplines without deep reflection. Both tendencies can lead to spiritual depression.
Physical factors also influence our spiritual condition. Fatigue, illness, and even genetic predispositions can make us more vulnerable to downcast spirits. Satan often uses these vulnerabilities as entry points to discourage us.
The first step in addressing spiritual depression is self-awareness. "Get to know yourself," advised Dr. Lloyd-Jones. Understand your unique triggers and tendencies. Are you prone to overthinking? Do you neglect adequate rest? Do you isolate yourself when struggling?
The Psalmist models the path forward: "Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." Notice how he speaks to himself rather than simply listening to his own negative thoughts. This active self-talk redirects his focus from circumstances to God's unchanging character.
Today, recognize that spiritual depression is a common experience among believers. Your struggle doesn't indicate weak faith—it merely reveals your need for the ongoing grace of Christ. Begin by acknowledging where you are spiritually and committing to the journey ahead.
