The Seven Sayings of Jesus From the Cross

DAY 4 OF 8

"Woman, Here Is Your Son" (John 19:26-27)

Jesus’ third statement from the cross is deeply personal. In the ancient world, the responsibility of caring for a widowed mother would fall to the eldest son. But instead of entrusting Mary to His biological siblings, Jesus assigns this duty to His Beloved Disciple, typically thought of as John.

Why? It reveals that spiritual family transcends bloodlines. Jesus is forming a new family — one not bound by ancestry but by faith. This is the fulfillment of what He had earlier taught: "Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother" (Matthew 12:50).

Personal Application

  • How does this moment reshape our understanding of church as a family?
  • Who has God placed in your life that needs care, even if they are not biologically related to you?
  • How can you be more intentional in providing for those around you?

Prayer

Jesus, even in suffering, You thought of others. Teach me to love selflessly, to care for those You have placed in my life, and to see my spiritual family as You do. Help me to be faithful in bearing the burdens of others. Amen.
