The Uniqueness and Universality of Christ (Part 3)
Today’s reading is a continuation of Section 3 of the Lausanne Covenant - The Uniqueness and Universality of Christ. Read Here.
To proclaim Jesus as ‘the Saviour of the world’ is not to affirm that all people are either automatically or ultimately saved, still less to affirm that all religions offer salvation in Christ. Rather it is to proclaim God’s love for a world of sinners and to invite everyone to respond to him as Saviour and Lord in the wholehearted personal commitment of repentance and faith. Jesus Christ has been exalted above every other name; we long for the day when every knee shall bow to him and every tongue shall confess him Lord.
The Universality of Christ: He is the Saviour of the World
Because Jesus Christ is the only Saviour, his gospel must be taken to the whole world. Many Samaritans called him ‘the Saviour of the world’ (John 4:42), and John wrote, ‘the Father has sent his Son as the Saviour of the world’ (1 John 4:14).
This does not mean that everyone is automatically or ultimately saved. Salvation comes only by believing in the Lord Jesus (Acts 16:31), and some will reject him. Nor do all religions lead to true salvation. Those that offer a salvation offer it as a reward for good works. The Christian message is ‘the gospel of the grace of God’ (Acts 20:24)—mercy for sinners who deserve nothing except judgment.
To proclaim Christ as ‘the Saviour of the world’ is to declare God’s great love in sending his Son to die for us (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). It is an invitation to all people, without distinction. Paul felt this deeply: ‘I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish’ (Romans 1:14). No racial or social barrier must block the preaching of the gospel.
God has exalted Jesus to the highest place so that ‘every knee should bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord’ (Philippians 2:10-11). We, too, should long for the lordship of Jesus Christ to be acknowledged. This is the goal of evangelism.
Reflection:
What does proclaiming Jesus as the Saviour of the world inspire you to do in your own witness?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, exalted above every name, help me share your gospel with all people, without barriers or prejudice.
