Through the Word: Knowing God, Making Him Known

DAY 18 OF 30

The Lord’s Prayer:

Prayer is intentional communication with God, drawing near to God with faith, humility, and trust. In this scripture, we see Jesus teach His disciples to pray. Maybe you have heard this prayer before, and maybe you haven’t. Let’s take a look at each verse.

Verse 9 begins by recognizing God as our Father who is seated in the highest place. It then goes on to declare that His name is HOLY. We pray from a place of knowing who we are praying to. Verse 10 prays for Heaven to come to earth—this is what we are living for—to see this happen! We acknowledge our need for this in our broken world. In verse 11, we express our neediness for God. He is our daily bread, meaning that He is our sustenance; He fuels our lives every day. We must recognize that it is only through Him that we can live each day.

Verse 12 we need God’s forgiveness (His grace and His mercy!) and from a place of receiving His forgiveness that we do not deserve for all the wrongs we have done against Him, we are invited to forgive and extend our hand to those who have sinned or done wrong against us (verse 14 & 15 have more to say on this). Verse 13, we ask God to keep us from being led into temptation, and that He would protect us and guide us, and free us from anything that would not be from God.
