God of the in Betweenનમૂનો

Back to our story. Here we are, on the boat headed toward the other side of the lake. We’re with the disciples on the top deck, and Jesus is asleep down below. Laughing and reminiscing about the day, we keep the bow pointed toward the town of Gerasene's on the other side of the lake, when suddenly, “a squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped.”

Imagine this. The boat was swamped with water. The winds were raging. The disciples were in great danger. Confusion. Chaos. Darkness. The sun had been hidden by thick black clouds. Nowhere in the story do we hear a disciple yelling over the howling winds, “It’s okay! Jesus said we’re going to cross to the other side!” Nowhere do we see a disciple running toward the sails proclaiming, “No one worry! Our miracle-working friend said we’re heading to the other shore and, if He said it, I believe it no matter what!”

We can shake our heads in disappointment at those doubting disciples, but when the doctor’s report says cancer and the pregnancy test says negative and the ache in my back tells me I can’t do the things I used to, don’t we, too, doubt? When it’s 2 am and our teen hasn’t come home, when our grown daughter is still jobless, and when our son is still fighting with his wife, don’t we also look at the storm? When the gossip still stings, the church hurt is still fresh, and our pillow is still wet from last night’s tears…

If faith is acting like the Word of God is true, then how are we acting about the storm we’re facing? No matter how we act or what we do, God is with us in the storm.
