SMALL DECISIONS, BIG REWARDS
After the time of Joseph, the Hebrews in Egypt were fruitful and multiplied. They became so numerous, in fact, that they were perceived as a threat to the government. So Pharaoh ordered the death of every male Hebrew infant.
One Hebrew woman, Jochebed, who had just given birth to a son, noticed that “he was no ordinary child” and she refused to comply with the order (Hebrews 11:23, NIV). It was a decision that would have greater repercussions than she could have imagined.
At first she hid her boy. Then when he was three months old, Jochebed put him in a papyrus basket and gently placed him in the Nile, with hope and expectancy.
Bathing by the riverside, Pharaoh’s daughter spotted the baby and rescued him. She named him Moses and decided to raise him as her own son.
This is the same Moses whom God would use to deliver the Hebrews from slavery. The same Moses who would part the Red Sea. The same Moses who would give the Hebrews God’s Law. The same Moses who would prepare them to possess the land God had promised them.
Big rewards for a “small” decision!
One lesson we can take away from the story of Jochebed and her son is that doing the right thing requires us to value life from before birth throughout adulthood.
Life is God’s idea. We are made in His image—each a beautiful seed intended to grow until we bloom and bear the fruit He intends.
Jochebed’s son later wrote, “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.” And here’s the part that still echoes in the voice of courage, grace, and wisdom: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19, NIV).
DO THE RIGHT THING: Are you in a crisis pregnancy, or know someone who is? Are you considering becoming a foster or adoptive parent? Are you a parent or someone who can come alongside parents? How can you honor the value that God places on children and on all life?
