Day 1: Reconciled

I wonder when the last time was that you truly felt pursued by Jesus. Not just as though you’ve known about him, or followed him out of routine, but felt his love seeking you out.

I remember being 21, feeling disillusioned, lost, and worn out by the world. And yet somehow, I found myself on the doorstep of my old church like a prodigal daughter. A random invite to a youth camp, which I’ll be honest, I accepted mostly out of boredom, led to a recommitment of faith that changed my whole life.

I’ve had moments since where I’ve just known that God is near and drawing me deeper. Not out of obligation, but desire. Because that’s what reconciliation really is. It’s God meeting us again and again, even when we feel unworthy or unaware.

In John 4, it says Jesus “had to go through Samaria." (John 4:4 NIV) But that “had to” wasn’t geographical convenience, it was divine necessity. Jews would normally avoid going through Samaria due to cultural tensions. The Greek word 'dei' used there speaks of divine purpose. Jesus had to meet this woman - for such a time as this.

While she’s trying to avoid judgment by collecting water in the heat of the day, Jesus is already waiting, already present, and essentially, already pursuing. That’s reconciliation - God showing up before we even know we need him.

And when Jesus asks for a drink, the woman’s confused. She’s focused on cultural divides, her shame, and her past. “You are a Jew and I’m a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (John 4:9 NIV) But don’t we do that too? Make excuses about why we can’t draw near? “How can I pray when I haven’t in so long?” “How can I properly seek him with all of these responsibilities on my plate?”

But Jesus replies: “If you knew the gift of God...” (John 4:10 NIV) Despite reading and loving this passage for over a decade, that word gift caught me recently. The gift of his presence, of reconciliation, and of freedom. Have we become so familiar with the gift that we’ve forgotten its value?

Let’s not treat God’s pursuit as casual. He’s waiting at the well every day - inviting us to drink again.
