Finding Our Worth in the Real Thing

DAY 3 OF 3

Day 3: It’ll Be Worth It

Over the last few days, we have considered how rules often replace our relationship with Jesus and how wealth and material possessions can distract us from the eternal investments God is calling us to make. Now we turn to a very important question: Is this all really worth it? The work it takes to stay focused on the eternal in the midst of very compelling, albeit temporary pleasures, is hard. And yet, Jesus reminds us that it is worth more than we can imagine.

Jesus ends his interaction with the rich young ruler with a shocking pronouncement; it will be really hard for rich people to enter the Kingdom of heaven. Why? Because treasures and comforts on the earth often get in the way of investing in the eternal. Jesus essentially tells his followers that while money, comfort, power, and influence can guarantee some short-term satisfaction, in the long run, those things do not lead to a deep relationship with God or have eternal significance. The return on investing in those things is temporary.

And while this can be discouraging and hard to hear, Jesus does not end there. Towards the end of Matthew 19, Jesus promises his followers that those who give up earthly security will be well rewarded in eternity. He actually says that those who sacrifice in this life will be rewarded one hundred times in the next; that is an impressive return on investment!

So often we are tempted to value the good things God gives over our relationship with God Himself. And yet, this story is a great reminder not to be distracted by good things, when great things are available in eternity. Instead, we must focus our time, energy, and attention in investing in the things that matter in the long run; our relationship with God and His people. Investing in those things will be well worth it for eternity.

Next Step:

Spend some time rewatching "The Real Ting" from Day 1 and reflecting on today’s devotional. Honestly consider if the wait for an eternal ROI feels worth it to you. Without shame or guilt, gently ask God to reveal to you what things you are holding onto for satisfaction that you may need to loosen your grip on in order to embrace the life God is calling you towards.
