God's Inheritance Plan: What Proverbs 13:22 Actually Means

DAY 2 OF 3

Day 2: The Five Capitals

When Solomon wrote about building a house in Proverbs 24, he wasn't just talking about construction.

He was describing the process of establishing a family legacy that would endure through generations. Notice the progression: wisdom builds, understanding establishes, and knowledge fills the house with treasures.

This reveals a fundamental truth about biblical inheritance: it's built layer by layer, with each type of capital supporting the others.

Today, let's explore the five capitals that I believe we're called to pass down:

  1. Financial Capital: This includes monetary assets, property, investments, and resources that provide opportunity. God does intend for His people to build and transfer material wealth when possible. "The wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous" (Proverbs 13:22b).
  2. Wisdom Capital: Financial literacy, discernment in decision-making, and practical knowledge passed through mentorship. "How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!" (Proverbs 16:16).
  3. Spiritual Capital: A living faith modeled daily, a heritage of prayer, godly values deeply instilled. "We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD" (Psalm 78:4).
  4. Social Capital: Healthy family relationships, connections to faith community, and networks of support. "Two are better than one... If either of them falls down, one can help the other up" (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).
  5. Character Capital: Integrity, work ethic, resilience, and generosity. "The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them" (Proverbs 20:7).

Notice how these capitals interweave and reinforce each other. Financial capital provides opportunities to develop wisdom. Character capital enables proper stewardship of financial resources. Spiritual capital shapes character and social connections.

In Jesus' parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), the master entrusted his servants with financial resources—but was ultimately measuring their character and wisdom in handling those resources.

The inheritance they received included both the original capital and the opportunity to develop the capacity to manage it.

Today, consider which of these five capitals you're intentionally building and transferring.

Which needs more attention?

Let’s Pray

Father, thank You for entrusting me with resources of all kinds. Help me to be intentional about building each of these five capitals. Show me where I'm neglecting important aspects of the inheritance You want me to leave. May my descendants receive not just what I have but what I know, who I love, and most importantly, Who I serve.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
