Cultivating Consistency in the Word

DAY 3 OF 3

While understanding the spiritual dynamics of consistency has been vital in my journey, I've also needed practical strategies. Today, I want to share three tangible steps that have helped me develop lasting consistency in my time with God.

First, I found a role model, not just an accountability partner. In 1 Corinthians 11:1, Paul writes, "Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ." Notice that Paul didn't merely offer accountability—he modeled what a Christ-centered life looks like. While accountability has value, true consistency in my life developed when I was inspired by people who bore the fruit of time with God.

I encourage you to look around your church, small group, or community. Who radiates the presence of God? Whose spiritual insights reveal depth in Scripture? These individuals aren't just reading their Bibles; they're being transformed by them. Spend time with these people. Ask questions about their devotional practices. Learn not just what they do but why and how they do it.

Second, I established a plan for consistently reading my Bible that worked for me—not what was necessarily convenient, but what was realistic and sustainable. Without a specific plan, my good intentions rarely transformed into consistent action. As Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path," but I needed to actually pick up that lamp and use it consistently.

Finally, I put my time with God on my calendar—literally. I schedule meetings, appointments, classes, and social events. Why wouldn't I schedule the most important relationship in my life? Whether digital or physical, your calendar reveals your priorities. When I scheduled time with God, I transformed it from an intention into a commitment.

For me, it's the first thing in the morning before the demands of life take over. When something interrupts my planned time with God, I do what I'd do with any valued relationship: reschedule and show up at the new time.

I've learned that most inconsistency stems from a lack of commitment, not a lack of time. As I implemented these practices, what began as duty gradually transformed into desire. God drew near as I drew near to Him, and His presence created a spiritual hunger that transcended discipline. I know the same will be true for you as you make the sacrifice to sit at His feet each and every day.
