Understanding God’s Storyનમૂનો

God Grants His People a Place to Dwell
Sometimes we may think God does not care about physical things. After all, God is more interested in spiritual things, right? I encounter this belief a lot. Somewhere along the way so many of us were taught that God is more concerned with spirituality than He is physicality. But according to His Word, God cares about both!
I want to clear up two misconceptions that people often have about God’s creation. We can call these two false beliefs materialism and gnosticism.
Materialism emphasizes the physicality of God’s creation to the neglect or outright denial of spiritual reality. This worldview seeks to understand the world only as it relates to its physical parts.
Gnosticism emphasizes the spirituality of God’s creation to the neglect of the physicality of God’s creation. This worldview teaches that the material realm is inherently bad and that salvation is a sort of escape from our bodies.
But the biblical story corrects both of these errors. The place God creates for His people equally emphasizes the physicality and the spirituality of His kingdom. The garden of Eden is where heaven and earth meet. The kingdom is physical and spiritual.
God cares about all aspects of His creation. God cares deeply about the place He made for His people.
A consistent theme in Genesis 1 is the repetition that God’s creation is good. God created the light. It was good. God saw the dry land and the sea. It was good. God created plants that bear fruit. It was good. God created great lights for the sky. It was good. God created all living creatures. It was good. God created image-bearers. It was good.
Our response to God’s creation should mirror Genesis 1:31, “God saw all that he made, and it was very good indeed.” The king has established a place for His kingdom, and it is good! We were never meant to be nomads. At the heart of our story, we were not meant to be sojourners or exiles. Humanity has a home.
The place of God is where the people of God encounter the presence of God. The story opens with the distinct hope that God dwells on earth with His people. The garden of Eden is the place where God intends for His people to dwell so that He might be present with them forever.
