Love keeps the rules. Years ago, a pop song hit the charts, showing surprising staying power. It was a pretty melody wrapped around a ridiculous proposition. The story line centered on a girl explaining to one love that she has another lover – “but that doesn’t mean I love you any less.” While the song admitted that having two lovers broke all the rules, it defended the illicit involvement based on felt needs.

“Torn Between Two Lovers” played out as my high school days ran out. In my naivety, I laughed the song off as a silly writer’s fantasy. Imagine my surprise when I started hearing that song played over and over again in counseling situations. “Pastor, I know this is wrong, but it feels right” – “I love my wife and kids, but I love her too, Pastor.”

They should have titled that song: “Tearing Up Your Loved Ones.”

Even an atheist admits that true love is shrouded in mystery. King Solomon couldn’t figure it out with all his experimentation. Love requires a framework of truth and commitment. For the mysteries of love to find their purest expression, we must love within the rules. Don’t tell people, “Down deep I really love the Lord,” unless you walk according to His Word.
