Hello and Welcome to a series of reflections called “Doing Theology from below.” These reflections are designed for those who want to explore a way of reading Scripture that is liberating, especially in vulnerable urban communities. Doing Theology from Below is learning how to read the text not “to” not “for” but “with” those we are called to love and serve and to do so with Jesus as our rabbi.

God made us for community. We were not made to be alone. When we invite Jesus into our lives and receive His Spirit, He draws us into something bigger than ourselves. Church community can be hard and it can be messy, but when people of different backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities come together in one Spirit, it brings glory to God in a way that nothing else can.

Life is confusing and overwhelming at times. We wish there was a simple answer to our questions and problems, so why do we resist when people say, “What you need is Jesus”? Truth? “Jesus” isn’t just a church answer to church questions. As members of the early church discovered, Jesus is the answer you’re looking for. He really is what you need. Period.

God began by calling a man, then a nation, and finally through Jesus, established a church.
