Day 21: The Child Who Will Rule

Reflection:

At Advent we proclaim, “Unto us a child is born.” Yet He comes with the government on His shoulders. This is not just a nativity, it’s the arrival of the true King.

When Isaiah first spoke these words, Israel longed for a king who would bring justice and peace. The promise of a child, born to rule with wisdom and power, was a promise of hope. But the true fulfillment of this prophecy would come in a way no one expected.

At Advent, we celebrate the arrival of this King, Jesus, the Messiah. His authority was not established with armies or thrones but through humility and sacrifice. The government upon His shoulders was not the weight of earthly crowns, but the weight of the cross itself. In carrying it, He carried our sins, defeating the powers of darkness once and for all.

Christ’s Kingship is yet another paradox of Advent: His royal authority shines most clearly in His suffering. From the cross comes His everlasting reign. As Psalm 132:17-18 declares, “I will make a horn sprout for David… I will clothe his enemies with shame, but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.” Isaiah 9:7 echoes the same promise: “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.”

Advent reminds us that the child of Bethlehem is also the King of glory. His rule brings a peace that will never fade. One day every rival power will bow before Him. Until then, we live under His reign, trusting the Shepherd-King who carried the cross so that His kingdom of justice and peace would carry us forever.
