Six Streams of Living Water

DAY 1 OF 7

A Prayer-Filled Life

In his book “Streams of Living Water”, theologian Richard Foster outlines six historical movements or “streams” of the Christian Church. These streams represent the richness of ways Christians have encountered God over the centuries.

The first stream, inspired by the Church’s contemplative tradition, is the prayer-filled life. This stream speaks of a life in constant communication with God, defined by Biblical encouragements.

For many of us, a prayer-filled life looks like “someone else’s life…” but not ours. Others might be able to pray unceasingly, but we can’t. Others might have space for deep contemplation, but we don’t. We imagine a prayer-filled life requires uninterrupted devotion, and therefore conclude: “I can’t do it”. We resign ourselves to “praying sometimes” rather than “praying continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

This, though, is a heartbreaking place to settle. It’s far short of the deeply relational spiritual life Jesus promises. As psychologist David Benner describes, prayer is “the soul’s native language.” It’s our most accurate way of connecting with God.

Today, a prayer-filled life is something you can aspire to. All it takes is a perspective shift.

Imagine walking through a new city with a close friend; a labyrinth of streets, sights, and sounds.

Sometimes, your conversations flow effortlessly. Other times, you simply enjoy the silence, reveling in the shared experience. Together, you navigate the city’s twists and turns, deciding when to rest, where to eat, and which way to go. You move as one, united in purpose and close in connection. You speak, then you listen. You walk, then you pause. This is what a prayer-filled life looks like. It’s not about constant talking or hours on your knees.

A prayer-filled life is a life in constant awareness of God’s presence, sharing each moment with Him.

Prayer

Lord, let my life become a quiet river of prayer, flowing through every thought, every step, and every breath. Teach me to notice Your presence in the shimmer of morning light, in the hush of evening shadows, in the rhythm of daily tasks. May my heart speak to You without words, and may Your love answer in ways my soul can feel.

In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
