Once Jesus cleared out the traders in the temple, the blind and lame came to Him to be healed. He is replacing commerce with mercy; exclusive access with a warm welcome into the house of God. The children in the temple continue the praise of the crowds in Jerusalem, but the chief priests and scribes are indignant at the praise Jesus receives from ignorant children. They expect Jesus to silence this inappropriate worship. Instead, He rebukes the temple leaders with the words of Psalm 8: “out of the mouths of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise” (Matthew 21:16, ESV). The smallest of society recognise what the learned leaders do not: Jesus is the Lord’s Messiah.
Today, ponder this: True worship means acknowledging that Jesus is Lord. We cannot please God whilst rejecting the Son He has sent. Take a moment to imagine Jesus in the temple court. Welcoming the children. Healing the sick. Revealing God’s heart of mercy and compassion. Let this image inspire your worship of Jesus today. You might consider praying the words of Psalm 8 with this Saviour in mind.
