Faith Formation Framework Series 1: Faith Shared by AdultsNäide

The Ministry of Listening
Focus
Breath Prayer: “Slow me down, Lord, so I can listen.”
Listen
Scripture: James 1:19 (NIV)
"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."
Reflection:
Young people live in a world full of voices telling them what to do and believe. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is to listen—to hear their questions, their doubts, their struggles. Listening is not about fixing or correcting; it’s about making room for trust. When we listen, we communicate: “You matter. Your story matters. God is present, and he welcomes your questions.”
Apply
When was the last time you simply listened to a young person without offering advice? How might you practice that this week?
Respond
Spirit of wisdom, teach me to listen well. Help me create safe spaces for young people to speak freely, knowing that you are at work even when I am silent.

About this Plan

Young people need adults who show up for them—not just at church events, but in everyday life. This first part of the Faith Formation Framework invites you to consider how your presence, your listening, and your own growing faith can become a gift to the next generation. We invite you to plan your work with young people in accordance with the safe environment policies of your local faith community. Other than that, you don’t need special credentials—just a willing heart.
