Formed by the Game: 30 Days of Seeing God in the Liturgies of SportNäide

The Coach’s Voice
The coach’s voice is vital in sport. Amid the roar of the crowd, the chaos of the game, and the pressure of competition, athletes train their ears to hear instructions, corrections, and encouragement. A well-timed word from a coach can change the outcome of a game. In practices, locker rooms, and huddles, the rhythm of listening and responding becomes part of the liturgy of sport. Athletes learn to block out distractions, trust authority, and act with confidence because they’ve tuned their ears to one guiding voice.
But in sport culture, this liturgy can also train us in unhealthy ways. Some athletes begin to believe that their worth is tied to a coach’s approval or fear failure if they miss a command. Parents and fans may echo this same pressure, where words shape identity around performance rather than love. The coach’s voice can either build up or break down, encourage or wound.
Spiritually, we are reminded that God Himself is the ultimate Coach. Isaiah paints the picture: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” God’s voice brings clarity and direction, not confusion or shame. He doesn’t bark orders to control us but gently guides us toward life and truth. His Word and His Spirit serve as the steadying voice amid the noise of culture, temptation, and doubt.
Learning to hear God’s voice requires intentionality. Just as athletes train their ears to their coach, we train our hearts to Scripture, prayer, and the presence of the Spirit. Over time, His words shape our instincts, give us courage, and correct us when we stray.
Next time you hear a coach’s voice in a game or practice, treat it as a liturgical reminder. Pause and ask: whose voice am I training my soul to follow? God’s voice may challenge your comfort, but it always leads to life. When we obey, we discover His guidance is not just instruction—it is encouragement, protection, and hope.
Prayer:
“Lord, help me to hear Your voice above all others. Give me the wisdom and courage to follow Your guidance, trusting that You lead me in the way that brings life and glory to Your name. Amen.”
