Fighting Injustice With Art and Faith

DAY 30 OF 30

Jesus came to minister to the oppressed. Isaiah prophesied that this was His destiny. It was also His passion. Jesus summarized His purpose in a concise and attractive way: "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly" (John 10:10, NRSV)

Paul said something about believers, a mission statement of sorts, for all of us: We are God’s poetry.

The word for workmanship (what he made us) in the following passage is the Greek word for poetry: "We are what he made us, created in Christ for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life (Ephesians 2:10, NRSV).

What story is your life telling?

Jesus Himself is making something creative and artful out of your life. Isn't that an amazing thought? As believers and coheirs with Christ, we are part of His ministry. This, too is our mandate. This is our destiny.

For the last 29 days, we've been exploring what it means to use faith to fight injustice and how art is a key weapon in that valiant fight. We've looked at a few people in the history of our faith who stood firm and stood up to great evils. They used creativity to fight giants of injustice, and they trusted deeply in God.

As we close this study, it's only right to fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author of our faith.

What a joy to realize that He created us for good works, and that very act of creation is characterized in the Bible as a work of art.

You are called to co-create a beautiful story with God as you live out your life. So, do what you love. It matters! To God. The world needs it!

May you feel empowered and inspired to help those who face injustice as you walk out your calling and use your gifts to bring glory to God.

Action Point:

Take time to thank God that you are his special workmanship. Consider the story your life is telling right now. Write a short poem about what that story is.

About this Plan

Fighting Injustice With Art and Faith

Long ago, a writer named Hannah More used her poems to help end slavery. Another writer, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, wrote stories that showed how terrible forced labor was in his country. Just like them, today's artists can use the gifts God has given them combined with the truth of God's word to make a difference in the world. This plan will encourage you to use your God-given talents to stand up for truth and help others in need.
