Be Fruitful

DAY 2 OF 3

THE FRUITS OF MANKIND

There is a concept that C. S. Lewis develops in his book Mere Christianity: the difference between Biological Life (Bios) and Spiritual Life (Zoe). Biological life is that which human beings possess by nature, sustained through food, water, oxygen, and the like. Spiritual life is that which we have in God from all eternity.

In this passage of Scripture, we see that God created man in His own image and likeness, and He blessed them, saying: “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth…” This is a call to bring forth and “create” biological life in this world. In other words, to be fruitful in our Bios.

Human beings were made in the image and likeness of God; therefore, we bear some of His attributes, which are also distinct from those of plants and animals. That is why, in Genesis, it is said that mankind shall rule over the earth and have dominion over the animals. This is more than a privilege—it is a responsibility, entrusted to us that we may carry it out faithfully.

This world is filled with Bios: plants, animals, and human beings, just as God willed it. Our lives and all of creation are gifts from His hand. Therefore, to witness the birth of a new child in this world is something beautiful, for in it we are fulfilling the call that God has given us.

Questions for reflection:

  1. Have we been faithful stewards of the Bios of this world?
  2. Can you imagine a world where mankind would no longer multiply?
