DAY 3 OF 5

THE MOSAIC OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

Jesus goes on to say, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27, ES). The Good Shepherd’s saving work shapes the way his sheep respond to him. They hear his voice. They are known. They follow. According to the Good Shepherd, these make up the mosaic of the Christian life—a life of purpose, connection, and direction. These three aspects are the wonderful work that we’re called into in both a definitive (once and for all) and an ongoing (daily) way.

Hearing. Each day, we need to hear the voice of our shepherd. Hear the voice of Jesus who calls all people to life with God, saying, “The kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). Hear his voice that says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Keep hearing his voice—turning to him in faith and trust—to be renewed by his mercy, which is new and fresh each morning.

Being known. We need to realize that we’re known. Know that Jesus knows you—every wound, every fear, every hope, every sin, every need. Know that he is a good shepherd who cares deeply about his sheep; he will tend to you with care and mercy. Know that he knows when to prod and when to protect.

Following. The Lord’s sheep follow their shepherd. Resolve to follow him once and for all. Then with each new morning, with your full attention, say, “Today I’ll keep giving my allegiance to the Shepherd who gave himself for me.”

Of the threefold sheep actions—hearing, being known, and following—which comes easiest to you? Which is more difficult? Why do you think that is?

About this Plan

Rhythms of Faith

Have you been feeling lost in today’s tumultuous world—and maybe in your own thoughts and emotions? Throughout Scripture, God reveals himself as a shepherd who leads, protects, provides, and stays near his people even in the face of danger and uncertainty. These devotions invite us to slow down and listen for our Shepherd’s voice, to rest in being fully known by him, and to follow wherever he leads.
