OVERCOMING DISTORTED THOUGHTS

Key Verse:
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.” — Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

Reflection:
The mind can be either a battlefield or a place of rest. Many women live trapped in distorted thoughts: “I am not enough,” “Everything will go wrong,” “God has forgotten me.” In In Search of Myself, we learn that identifying these patterns is essential for healing. In In the Mirror of Life, we are reminded that the mirror of the soul reflects not only who we are but also what we choose to think.

In CBT, these are called cognitive distortions — thoughts that do not match reality. Psychoanalysis shows how critical internalized voices echo in our minds. From a systemic perspective, we repeat limiting family beliefs such as: “A woman must endure everything,” “I cannot make mistakes.” But the Bible invites us to align our minds with what is true and comes from the heart of God.

Additional Verses:

  • “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” — Proverbs 23:7a (KJV).
  • “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” — Romans 12:2 (NIV).

Systemic Reflection Phrase:
“I am not obligated to repeat inherited thoughts. I choose to feed my mind with the truth that sets me free.”

Practical Challenge:
Today, identify one recurring distorted thought. Write it down on paper. Next to it, replace it with a biblical truth. Example: “I am incapable” → “I can do all things through Christ” (Philippians 4:13).

Therapeutic Technique:
Use a coping card: write down a short verse (such as Joshua 1:9 or Psalm 46:1). Whenever a negative thought arises, read it aloud as an immediate antidote.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to discern between the thoughts that imprison me and the truth that sets me free. Teach me to replace distortions with Your Word. May I cultivate a healthy mind, focused on what is pure, right, and true. In You, I find clarity and peace. Amen.
