Coming to Life: 30-Day Devotional

DAY 10 OF 30

The Temple

The temple in Jerusalem was the center of Israel’s worship. Built by Solomon, it symbolized God’s presence among His people. Sacrifices were offered, prayers lifted, and festivals celebrated. Yet even Solomon acknowledged that no building could contain the God of heaven. The temple was a sign, not the fullness, of God’s dwelling.

The beauty of the temple stirred longing in the hearts of worshipers. The psalmist cried, “How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts!” To be near God was the deepest desire of His people. But sin created a barrier that sacrifices and rituals could only temporarily cover.

Jesus redefined the meaning of the temple. When He said, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,” He was pointing to Himself. He is the true temple, the dwelling of God with man. In Him, the fullness of God’s presence comes near. His death and resurrection opened the way for us to draw near without fear.

And now, through the Spirit, the people of God are called His temple. Paul declares that we are God’s dwelling place. No longer confined to a building in Jerusalem, God’s presence fills His people. The church becomes the living temple where His Spirit resides.

The story of the temple points us to the ultimate dwelling of God with His people in the new creation. Revelation shows a city where no temple is needed, for “the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” What began with stone walls now finds fulfillment in Christ and His body, the church.

Our longing for God’s presence is met in Jesus, who is both the sacrifice and the sanctuary. As His people, we are called to live as a holy dwelling, reflecting His presence to the world.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does knowing that you are God’s temple change the way you live daily life?
  2. What practices help you cultivate a deeper awareness of God’s presence with you?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that in Christ, You have made Your dwelling with us. Thank You that by Your Spirit, I am part of Your living temple. Help me to honor Your presence in my life and to reflect Your holiness to the world around me. Amen.
