Holy, Healthy, Whole: Growing Fruits of the Spirit for Weight Loss and WellnessNäide

How to Grow Fruit
So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, you will recognize them by their fruits. Matthew 7:17-20 (NIV)
When I think about the fruits of the Spirit, I often have this vague sense of guilt.
Thoughts like these go through my mind:
- I wish I were more loving toward my husband and kids.
- I need more self-control! Think of what would be improved in my life.
- If only I were more patient instead of rushing ahead and trying to take control.
Can you relate? When it comes to healthy eating and weight loss, it’s even more tempting to feel guilt or shame. Your list might look something like this:
- I always start new diets, then stop them. I never stick with it.
- If only I had self-control around doughnuts!
- I want to reach my goal weight now. Why can’t I be more patient?
Notice that in all these statements, I’m making myself the focus. Yet the Bible talks about the fruits of the Spirit, not the fruits of the woman.
Spiritual fruits only come from maturity and deepening in faith.
By reading this study and approaching weight loss from a faith-based perspective, your fruits of the Spirit will grow because you are putting God first. You’ll develop more peace, patience, and kindness around your eating habits and your relationship with your body.
This is how to grow fruit – fruit that will last.
Reflection: How are you taking steps to grow in faith today?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to grow in the fruits of the Spirit so that I can lose weight, but most of all so that I can honor and serve You with my life. Help me remain deeply rooted in You, so that others may see the fruits of my faith. I can’t do this on my own, and I’m trusting in You. In Your name I pray, Amen.
