Fear Not! A Guide to Living a Fearless Life

DAY 11 OF 30

An Ever-Present Help in Trouble

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging” (Psalm 46:1-3, NIV).

Have you ever had a person in your life that you knew you could always turn to, regardless of the situation? Who’s got your back when the chips are down? There has probably been some point in your life where that trusted person let you down, or maybe they have passed away and are not there for you anymore.

One of God’s attributes is that He is omnipresent, meaning He is present everywhere at once. The passage above in Psalms assures us that God is always present and ready to help in times of trouble. Unfortunately, many of us are always looking for someone with skin on first, and if that doesn’t work out, then we’ll seek God. Let’s take a quick test…when you get sick, where do you turn first?

If you’ve ever been to the eye doctor, you have no doubt had them flipping lenses back and forth, asking you, Better or worse? What if we could flip lenses and see from the natural realm into the spiritual realm? What would you see in the spiritual realm? We would certainly see good and evil, angels and demons, but we would also see that “the word of God is living and powerful” (Hebrews 4:12, NKJV).

Then, we would realize the things we have put our trust in, like the government, our money, and our homes, are temporal at best. There is going to be a time in your life when the things of this earth will give way, and the things you thought you could hold on to will let you down.

“In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you’ll have it forever, real and eternal” (John 12:25, MSG). Are you holding on to the stuff of this earth? The lens into the spiritual realm is our heart, and Paul tells us, “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened” (Ephesians 1:18, NIV). Ask God to enlighten your spiritual eyes so you can see what is really important.

Where will your help come from in times of trouble? “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip” (Psalm 121:2-3, NIV). God offers you a comprehensive trouble policy, and it doesn’t cost you a dime.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, I pray You open the eyes of my heart so that I may be spiritually enlightened. I know You are actively at work in my life. You are my ever-present help in times of trouble, and because of that, I can live fearlessly. In Jesus name, amen.
