Is your thinking limited?
This week, we have been working through Philippians 4:6-7 part by part. Today we land on:
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7 NLT
This reminds me of Job’s words when he says:
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. – Job 42:3 NIV
Or King David, who wrote:
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. – Psalms 139:6 NIV
And God Himself, who declared through Isaiah:
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:9 NIV
Our thoughts are limited–and that’s both good news and bad news.
Bad news because, well, as humans, we have this urge to understand and make sense of everything, and we simply can’t.
The good news, however, is that our thoughts might be limited, but God’s aren’t.
Our intelligence, our own understanding—everything concerning us—is limited. But with God, nothing is! He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us (Ephesians 3:20).
In this light, it doesn’t make any sense to worry. Why waste our energy on trying to understand when instead we can leave that to the God whose understanding is limitless?
David tells us, “But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.” (Psalm 115:3 NKJV).
We won’t always understand why God does the things He does or allows the things He allows, but we do have this promise:
We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28 NIV
Let’s pray:
Heavenly Father, thank You that Your ways are higher than my ways, and Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. Help me today to give You all my worries and give me the strength to trust that You will work all things for my good. In Jesus’ name, amen.
