BibleProject | One Story: Foundations of the Bible

DAY 30 OF 30

Over the past 30 sessions, you’ve seen foundational characters, settings, and patterns that will continue throughout the rest of the Bible. Today, we’ll skip ahead to the end to see how the biblical story ends.

Ever since their exile from Eden (Gen. 3), humans have longed to return to their garden home. And in yesterday’s reading, the Israelites came so close. They carefully follow God’s instructions for building a mini-Eden, but when Moses tries to enter, he can’t. The next book, Leviticus, offers ways for humans to be in God’s presence, but these ancient laws aren’t a lasting solution. The rest of the Bible repeatedly highlights humanity’s deep desire to return to their garden home and their inability to do so alone. So how will humans ever make it back to their true home?

The Bible’s final pages envision the answer: Home comes to us. The book of Revelation ends with John’s vision of Heaven coming down to Earth, a new Eden. The garden is transformed into a glorious city with glowing golden streets. A new tree of life grows in the center, watered by streams flowing down from God’s throne, and his presence fills every corner with joy and life. This long-awaited reunion of Heaven and Earth is what the story of the Bible is all about.

Congratulations on finishing this plan! We hope that John’s words in Revelation can be an ongoing reminder that God is making all things new.

Reflection questions:

  • Reflect on the promises God made in Genesis and Exodus. Where do you see those promises fulfilled in today’s reading?
  • Compare Genesis 1-2 and Revelation 21-22. What hyperlinks do you notice? How might these connections reveal God’s hopes for humanity?
