DAY 8 OF 9

The One Thing That Keeps You from Sinking

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water” (Matt 14:28, ESV).

They all thought they were about to die. Howling winds, crashing waves, violent rocking, and the incessant spray of water made this storm on the Sea of Galilee, unlike any other they had experienced before. All through the night, the disciples rowed and bailed water, desperately trying to survive, and then, they saw a figure walking upon the water.

Terrified, they screamed, “It’s a ghost!" (v. 26).

But then Jesus said, “Take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid” (v. 27).

Then Peter, the spokesman of the group, said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water” (v. 28).

What a faith-filled request! Have you ever wondered what the other disciples thought when Peter said that? Did they wish they had dared to ask, or were they content to let him risk his life while they stayed in the boat?

Jesus’ gracious invitation to Peter was, “Come!” (v. 29).

First one foot stepped out of the boat, and then the other. Then Peter did what no other human has done: he walked out onto the water to meet Jesus. It seemed like great faith prompted Peter out of the boat, but it proved to be “little faith” when he took his eyes off Jesus and placed them on the wind and waves around him.

Sinking fast, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus, reaching out his hand, said, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (v. 31).

Jesus’ rebuke was a reminder that our faith must stay fixed on Christ, not the chaos around us. Have you ever been in a similar boat where storms swirl around you, yet you desire to trust God and step out in faith?

You may have a “go big or go home” outlook, similar to Peter's. You’re willing to step out in faith, take risks, and do hard things because you know that it comes with a big reward. Your discipline and drive are admirable, but the pursuit of holy leisure reminds you that while there’s an adrenaline rush in stepping out, the real reward is reaching and staying near to Jesus.

Peter’s act of faith wasn’t great because he stepped out where no other disciples dared to try, but in the heart posture that motivated his efforts. He wanted to be with Jesus. This is the true mark of faith for all who trust in Jesus. The pursuit of holy leisure invites you to cultivate a life where intimacy with Christ is the reward. No matter what storms come your way, he offers you his hand, and he will keep you from sinking.

About this Plan

One Thing

Many believers long for deeper intimacy with God, but their quiet times feel more dutiful than delightful. This 9-day devotional series explores the “one thing” Jesus said is truly necessary—being with him. Through stories of familiar biblical characters, you’ll learn about holy leisure, the unhurried, grace-filled rhythm of resting in God’s presence and savoring his Word. This is the one thing we need most, and it is the better portion.
