 Every Nation: Getting to Know God More Through Psalm 19

DAY 2 OF 6

What Does God Sound Like?

“I can’t hear God!” My five-year-old told me on our way to school. He looked out the window and got quiet, hoping to hear the Lord say something to Him. I feel the same way at times: “Why can’t I hear God?”

The Bible is full of stories about people hearing God’s voice. So it can be frustrating when that same thing doesn’t happen to us! But David reminds us in Psalm 19 that God’s creation is always speaking to us. Even after the house gets quiet at night, the world is still singing the message of who God is! Psalm 19:2-4 (NIV) says this about the skies:

Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.

God’s creation doesn’t speak in words that you and I learned when we were babies or at school. His world speaks to us in different ways, like in the crashing of a waterfall or in the buzz of bugs at night. It can be as soft as the flapping of a redbird’s wings and as powerful as thunder. Another psalm says, “Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy” (Psalm 96:11-12, NIV). The world is speaking God’s message. It reaches from east to west and to every nation!

  • As a family: Pick THREE things that make sound in nature. What do those sounds tell us about who God is? What do you think He is saying to us?
  • Need a hint? The sound of wind blowing reminds us that God is always near. The sound of birds chirping reminds us that God’s joy comes in the morning. The sound of giraffes munching on leaves reminds us that God always provides!

About this Plan

 Every Nation: Getting to Know God More Through Psalm 19

Did you know that you can learn about our amazing God whoever you are and wherever you go? The world around us teaches us about who He is. So does the Bible, which we call God’s Word. This week we’re going to read a whole chapter of God’s Word so we can learn what it means to see God in the world around us and the Word in front of us.
