Living Hope in a Suffering World: A Guided Reading of 1 Peter

DAY 3 OF 11

Verses to Memorize: 1 Peter 1:14-15

Summary:

An eternal perspective in the midst of persecution and trials provides a foundation for two critical qualities for this believing community. First, Peter exhorts them to live in holiness so that their lives match the character of the God who saved them and so that they stand out distinctly from the culture around them. Second, they are to fervently love one another remaining united and committed to one another to endure through their circumstances together.

Questions to ponder:

What key themes or big ideas seem significant in this passage?

How would you define “holiness” (see Leviticus 11:44-47; Isaiah 6:1-7; 2 Timothy 2:20-21). What other terms or descriptions help us to define “holy?”

What is the role of “fear” in our lives (see 1 Peter 1:17; Exodus 20:18-20; Proverbs 1:7; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Revelations 14:7)? How does Peter referring to us as “children” and God as “Father” further inform our understanding of “fear”?

Why is it so important for a believer to imitate God’s holiness in his or her conduct within the world? In what areas of your life are you still struggling to walk in holiness?

About this Plan

Living Hope in a Suffering World: A Guided Reading of 1 Peter

What does it mean to be "set apart" as a Christian? What do we do when we suffer because of it? This 11-day plan explores how believers can maintain their identity as God's chosen people while living as "strangers" in a hostile world.
