Daniel Fast - Walking in His Presence Daily.

DAY 7 OF 21

In Our Missteps And Failures

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” 1 John 2:1-2 (ESV)

Let’s be honest: we all want to be remembered for our best moments. Think of Peter, standing boldly before the multitude, proclaiming that Jesus possesses the “words of eternal life.” He knew there was no one else to turn to – no other Savior, no other source of hope – than Christ, the Son of the living God! Even, as others walked away, Peter stood firm, filled with confidence and commitment (John 6:66-69). Later, he passionately vowed to stay faithful to Jesus, no matter the cost. (Luke 22:31-34; Matthew 26:31-35).

But how quickly the tides of life can shift! Our best and noble intentions often collapse under pressure. The same Peter who had so fervently declared his loyalty soon found himself denying his Lord three times, his heart shattered as he wept in remorse. (Matthew 26:69-75; John 18:15-27). It’s a sobering reality: our devotion to Christ will face trials, and we, too, will stumble and require restoration. Faithfulness isn’t just a feeling; it is daily decision, a choice to follow Christ over our fleeting desires and the distractions of this world.

Judas, too, betrayed Jesus. The silver he received from the priests dazzled him, yet it burned within him like a hot coal, no longer a reward or a source of joy but a reminder of his treachery – a symbol of grief of sorrow, and regret. Those coins were not merely currency; they became a death sentence in his heart until he cried out, “I have sinned, betraying innocent blood” (Matthew 27:4). When we stray from the Lord, we also fill our hearts with anguish and despair. Jesus warned both of their impending betrayals. He unveiled Judas’s sin, yet Judas, looking into the eyes of love, did not repent but instead chose to press on in his evil (John 13:21-30; Luke 22:48). Could Judas have chosen differently?

Here’s the amazing truth: “But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. None of the transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness that he has done, he shall live” (Ezekiel 18:21-22 ESV). No sin is beyond God’s grace. His grace and mercy can cover any betrayal or disobedience (Ephesians 2:9-10; 1 John 1:9).

Like Peter and Judas, we all find ourselves tripping over our relationships with others, battling our sin, and trying to follow Jesus. We make mistakes, and we can experience epic failures. Yet, failure is not fatal; it doesn’t define us! The real question is: how will we respond when we stumble?

In Peter’s case, though the Lord did not erase Peter’s failures, He offered forgiveness and restoration, commissioning him for something greater – to strengthen others (John 21:1-18). In those moments, Jesus infused Peter with grace, hope and promise of purpose. The “sifting of Satan” is nothing compared to the glorious plan Jesus has for each of us (Luke 22:31-32).

The transgressions and failures we experience, even those that lead to devastating consequences, are not the end of the story! This is not because of our merit but because of God’s power and unfathomable love. He is in the business of restoration, eagerly embracing those who turn back to Him with sincere hearts, who run into His arms with repentance.

“And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:32

“Lord, You see all my failures and my moments of weakness. You know what holds me back. I thank You that You can redeem my experiences to reveal more of Yourself to me. Take my failures and transform them into instruments of Your glory! This journey is not about me; it’s all about You. Change me, restore me in Your strength, and work through me to accomplish Your will. Help me make the right choice in every challenge, to remain faithful to You. Purify my heart from any double-mindedness and from flirting with this world I submit to You Lord; Let Your will and purpose prevail in my life. Amen.”
