Psalms of LamentNäide

In times of mourning and anxiety, it can be easy for dishonoring words to spill from our lips. When overwhelmed and discouraged, we often settle for negativity and pessimism. Why is that? When we dwell in our struggles it impedes our ability to resolve the conflict in front of us. Still, how do we honor God in our actions, speech, and mindset, especially when things aren’t as planned?
It’s crucial to remain mindful of God’s faithfulness in seasons of grief so we can avoid falling into destructive routines. Our words and actions directly reflect the posture of our hearts. At times, divine correction is necessary to remind us of God’s faithfulness. If we only trust and praise God when things go our way, we are missing the fullness of faith in God to which we are called.
Remaining consistent in prayer is key (Colossians 4:2). Before you share your complaints with those close to you, bring them first to the Lord. Prayers of vulnerability are an invitation to intimacy with God, allowing him to listen, respond, and address our most personal needs. Give him space to tend to your heart before handling things alone. Prayer is a tool to strengthen your relationship with God. When we seek the Lord, he equips us with all we need to walk through the valley before us.
1. What is your initial response when you face anxiety? How do you honor God in your words and actions even when things aren’t going your way?
2. Do you pray for God to help during these times? Do you go to God or other people first?
Prayer: God, thank you for the priceless gift of prayer. Thank you that I get to come to you during times of uncertainty and anxiousness. May I not take it for granted but present my requests and worries to you first.
ESV, English Standard Version.
