Homesick for Heaven

DAY 1 OF 5

Fascination with God

When was the last time you paused - really paused - to look at the sky? Perhaps it was a sunset that bathed the horizon in flaming red and gold. Or the expansive view from a mountain peak that made you feel small and yet safe. Such moments touch us and make us marvel. And deep down, we feel it: There is more.

Creation is full of beauty - overwhelming, detailed and incredibly large. Around 30,000 species of fish frolic in the oceans, while our view from the shore only extends a few kilometers. Around 70 trillion stars shine above us - more than we can count. And with every breath we take, oxygen flows into our lungs - undeserved, natural and vital.

None of this is a coincidence, it is an invitation. The visible world is a window into an invisible reality. It bears the strong, loving and eternal signature of a Creator. The Bible says that God's eternal power and divine majesty are evident in his creation (cf. Romans 1:20). God's glory surrounds us and if we look, we can recognize it.

And yet we so often worship the creation and not the Creator. We lose ourselves in what we see and miss the one who sees us. The separation between God and man is palpable - in our longing, in our emptiness, and in the question: Where are you, God?

The answer is in a name: Jesus. In Him, God comes close to us. On the cross, He overcame the separation between us and our divine Father. His love reaches deeper than our guilt, further than our doubts. Those who trust Jesus receive new life - real, eternal, fulfilled life. And, as a child of God, you can once again be touched by His glory.

Jesus is the living Word. When we read the Bible, when we pray, and when we become still, something begins to shine within us. The Holy Spirit is at work. He changes us, step by step, so that we reflect God's beauty in the midst of everyday life.

For those who have been touched by God's glory do not remain silent. The natural reaction is amazement, thanksgiving, praise and the desire to share this fascination. This is precisely our calling: to make God visible through our lives.

Next Step: Collect pictures, Bible verses or your own thoughts and create a collage (physical or digital) that reflects God's beauty for you. Hang it up in a place where you will be reminded of it regularly.

About this Plan

Heaven is a central theme of our faith and yet is often misunderstood. Many long for hope, but their idea of heaven remains abstract and distant. However, the Bible shows us that heaven is real and tangible—and begins today. Those who recognize what is to come live changed in the here and now. In this reading plan, we discover how God is already bringing heaven into our everyday lives.
