Fighting the Lie of Not Good EnoughNäide

And It Was Good
Have you ever had a mosquito bite? Those annoying little bumps that itch like crazy and then turn red and sometimes scab over when you itch them too much? It’s easy to notice a mosquito bite, but have you ever looked closely at the mosquito?
Of course you haven’t because they’re tiny and fly off the moment you try to smack them. Or, if you do smack one mid-bite, they get smashed into a smear.
If you had the chance to examine one, you’d find their bodies are made up of the head, thorax, and abdomen, together containing eleven distinct parts, including a reproductive and respiratory system.
Kind of crazy, huh? Those tiny little bugs have complex systems designed not only to keep them alive but to reproduce and populate the earth with more buzzing, biting creatures.
Each time I think about how bugged I am by these insects, I am reminded that they are part of God’s creation. And all of God’s creation is good—even mosquitoes. God saw all that he had made, and it was good.
When I think of a mosquito, the last word I would use to describe it is good. Pesky? Yes. Stupid? Probably. Useless? Uh-huh. Worthless? I think so.
And yet, God looks at that mosquito and calls it good.
We assign the term good to things we place value in, but God assigns the term good to all he created not because they have value or worth on their own, but because he created them. We don’t get to decide whether or not God’s creation is good because he has already declared it as that. Pesky, stupid, useless, worthless—these words reflect the value we have given to the mosquito, but in God’s eyes that creature is good because his creation is good.
Because I believe God’s Word to be true, I must also believe that all he created is, indeed, good...even that mosquito. You see, we don’t need to see or understand the goodness of something to accept the value God has given it. Maybe that’s part of God’s goodness—to see value and worth where we can’t.
Prayer Prompt: Tell God how awesome he is for considering every little detail as he created the world and everything in it. Ask him to help you see all of his creation as good.

About this Plan

Not good enough…it doesn’t take long for these words to enter a girl’s heart. Not good enough to make the team or be in the popular group; not a good enough daughter, sister, student, friend... the list goes on. But what does it mean to be “good”? In this 5-day plan by author Kelsey Scism, middle school girls will look at God’s view of “good” and how that can shape the way they see themselves.
