More Than Just a Story - the Book of JohnNäide

Isn’t it interesting how steadfast Jesus remains, knowing what lies ahead? Pontius Pilate is torn between what he knows to be the truth about Jesus and what the people demand. This internal conflict continues throughout the passage as he struggles to balance his conscience with the crowd’s demands.
In an attempt to appease the people, Pilate has Jesus beaten. The soldiers place a crown of thorns on His head and drape a robe over Him, mocking Him as they call out, “Hail, the King of the Jews!” Despite this punishment and humiliation, the priests and leaders remain insistent on crucifying Jesus.
Jesus’s calm response in verse 11—“You have no power over me if it were not given to you from above”—highlights His divine authority and Pilate’s limited power. Pilate knows the truth and tries to set Jesus free. He has the power to do so, but ultimately, he gives in to public opinion and political pressure, handing Jesus over to be crucified.
Pilate’s role in Jesus’s crucifixion demonstrates the impact of leadership and the responsibility that comes with power. It challenges us to use our influence wisely and ethically, considering the consequences of our decisions on others. What would you have done in Pilate’s position? Siding against the people and freeing Jesus would likely have meant his own downfall—losing his social position, or perhaps even his life.
Prayer: Lord, please help me remain steadfast in my convictions. Keep me strong under pressure. Stand with me so that I may be courageous in doing what is right.
