Mentoring Lessons- Serving Adventure Sports AthletesNäide

How do you start serving a local action sport?
How have action sports developed where you live?
There is a kind of simplicity to action sports. Athletes typically utilize the natural and man-made environments already available to everyone – mountains and oceans, carparks and walkways. I started serving action sports people by noticing how people are using these environments. Skaters, surfers, mountain climbers, and parkour runners use the places around them creatively. So when considering how to serve them, first just turn up and observe. That’s what I did!
Most action sports don't have ‘set hours’ so you may need to put in long hours to build some credibility. Interestingly, it does not matter how good you are at the action sport, you just have to show you’re interested and ask questions in humility to learn. Most people are open to share advice.
I learned to ask what the physical needs are around the location and offer to help. It might be by collecting trash off the beach, helping clear a fallen tree off a bike track, or sweeping the skatepark. Show you’re a true servant by doing the jobs other people don't want to do.
Scripture to ponder – Matthew 5:13a
You are the salt of the earth.
Key Lesson: Be amongst those you want to reach and be salty. Add flavor and serve.

About this Plan

Adventure sports often push athletes to their physical and mental limits. As Christians, we can serve these athletes by offering support, encouragement, and prayer, while modeling Christ’s love and endurance. Through mentorship and community, we can help them find purpose, balance, and spiritual growth in the thrill of adventure. This study explores serving adventure sports athletes from experiences within the sports movement.
