John baptized people with a specific message and purpose: repentance (turning around) for the forgiveness of sins. His message was taken from Isaiah 40: God’s glory is about to be revealed so that all people can see it. This glory is being heralded in an unexpected place: the wilderness. Even though John’s message was fiery and his method was different, people listened.
When we look carefully at what he was calling people to, it was ultimately to be just. Repentance meant people should share with others and be fair in their dealings. John was preparing the crowds for someone who would come after him…
