Nehemiah: God's Invitation to RebuildNäide

Teamwork
In Nehemiah 3, we observe how the people of Judah worked together to rebuild the city walls. The workers were named, section-by-section, based on their purpose in repairing the wall. Often, we’re tempted to skim over lists like this in the Bible. However, we’ll miss something vital if we do. When reading this passage, you will notice the word “next” is repeated many times throughout the text. Everyone worked “next to” each other to rebuild the walls. Although each person has a different task, and some may seem more important than others, the end goal of rebuilding the wall was the same for everyone.
So often, we compare our gifts and jobs to others around us. Romans 12:3-8 reminds us that we are one body in Christ, with each member serving a different function. Some people are more gifted in certain areas than others and may appear to have a more significant role than us, but we are all working “next to” one another in order to grow the kingdom.
What are you gifted in? How can you use your gifts to serve the body of Christ?
Pray: If you are unsure of your gifts, pray for the Lord to reveal them to you. If you already know your gifts, pray God will give you opportunities to serve others with your gifts.

About this Plan

Often touted as a “leadership” book, Nehemiah is rich in application. The way Nehemiah led the exiled Israelites in Persia to rebuild and reoccupy Jerusalem was as much an exercise in surrender and supplication as it was leadership and strategy. In this 21-day reading plan, we’ll look to Nehemiah as a role model in prayer, obedience, perseverance, and, yes, leadership.
