Joshua – Lessons in the WildernessNäide

The Lesson of Faith
Faith and Fear
I encourage you to read the verses that go with each of these six reflections.
Joshua, Caleb, and ten other men, one from each of the twelve tribes, went to spy out the land. They discovered that all the Lord had said about the land was true, but there were obstacles – very tall ones. Some of the cities had high walls, and some of the inhabitants were similarly dauntingly tall. What appeared inviting turned out to be intimidating. Joshua and Caleb weren’t blind, but they said – it is possible if God is with us. The other ten said it was impossible, even terrifying. In effect they said – it isn’t possible, therefore, it can’t be true.
I’m not sure much has changed when it comes to the promises of God and the operation of faith. Remember, real faith is only ever possible in what God says – when He speaks. Faith is not a mechanistic tool (principle) to employ at leisure, or for our pleasure.
Joshua and Caleb believed what God said, and although they may have known some measure of fear – I can’t see how they wouldn’t have – they knew that if God had delivered them from the might of Egypt, He could deliver them from these powerful enemies as well.
This lesson in leadership is about trust, which is saying yes when you don’t know everything and when you can’t see around the corner. All leaders will have to take people where it is unfamiliar, even to them. Joshua passed the test with flying colours, yet he still had to wait another forty years before he possessed what he had seen, and before he could take others with him. He believed what God had told him. Faith and patience inherit the promises. Time is not our enemy.

About this Plan

Leadership is a hot topic. However, the definition of Christian leadership doesn’t follow worldly trends. Joshua is a perfect example. His training was in a wilderness, far from comfort or accolade. This study is a small taster from the upcoming book of the same title. These reflections will encourage you in the "wilderness." As seen in the life of Joshua, it's a time in which God can do wonderful things.
