Year of the Bible: Part Five of Twelve Näide

Unmet Expectations
In our reading today, David unexpectedly became more celebrated than King Saul. King Saul became angry because the city's women sang songs honoring both men, declaring, "Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands."
Proverbs says a man is tested by praise like silver is refined in a furnace (27:21).
King Saul was being tested; he measured the praise he received from the people and found it lacking. His response revealed he expected to be more highly regarded than anyone else in his kingdom. We also know Saul was insecure and small in his own eyes (1 Samuel 15:17). His insecurity and unrealistic expectations became a trap. Soon, he would captured by revenge and anxious fear regarding David's rise to prominence.
Saul forgot that his role as ruler was to protect, serve, and advance the purposes of God and His people. Imagine what could have happened with Saul and David if Saul chose to champion David instead of attack him.
Question: What attitude do you imagine David possessed that Saul did not, enabling him to keep a clear mind in this strange circumstance?
Prayer: Are your expectations in line with Jesus' expectations for your life? Invite Jesus to align your heart with His plans and desires. Ask Him for an increased ability to champion those around you as you lay down the self-centered pride that tells you that you need to be better than everyone else 100% of the time.
