Exiled on the island of Patmos, John wrote the book of Revelation to seven churches in the Roman province of Asia. The book opens with encouragement and warnings for the seven churches and is followed by a series of end-times visions. Revelation’s powerful imagery assures believers of Jesus’ coming return, His triumph over all His enemies, and the establishment of His kingdom that will know no end.

This December, we want to celebrate who JESUS IS. He is much more than we can comprehend; He is so good and multi-faceted! This reading plan will serve as an opportunity to look deeper into the many aspects of Jesus this holiday season. This plan was created by Madeleine Weidemann.

This Advent Guide comes from students, faculty and staff at Belmont University. Advent is that season of waiting that carefully and purposefully helps us to realign our priorities and to glimpse, anew, our place before God. Our humble hope is this guide helps people focus more fully on Jesus Christ through the Advent season.

This is the second of 12 monthly reading plans designed for a full year of study. Each plan focuses on Revelation while connecting related Old and New Testament passages. This month explores Revelation 4–5, where John sees God’s throne and the Lamb who is worthy to open the scroll. Related passages include Isaiah 6, Ezekiel 1, Daniel 7, and John 1. These chapters reveal God’s sovereignty, heavenly worship, and Christ’s central role in redemption. The monthly format makes it simple to follow and complete one section at a time.

"Canonical Hours" are a centuries-old tradition where Christians pause to pray at specific times. This practice grew from ancient Jewish customs; for instance, Psalm 119 mentions praising God seven times daily. In the Old Testament, priests offered sacrifices morning and night, and the New Testament shows Jesus' followers continuing this by heading to the Temple for "afternoon prayers." Names vary by Christian tradition: Liturgy of the Hours, Divine Office, Daily Office, Horologion, etc. This plan compiles the psalms and canticles of each day, so that you can participate in this ancient tradition of God's people.

During Advent, weekly readings from the nativity story draw our hearts to the wonder of Christ’s coming.
