Jesus is SupremeMuestra

Have you ever completed a workout and gone into the kitchen to grab something to eat or drink? You are feeling accomplished and ready to have some healthy breakfast when your eyes fixate on an absolutely exquisite Krispy Kreme doughnut leftover from the night before. You are so tempted to give in and feed your own, immediate desire, but you make the tough decision to hold off for the sake of your diet. You said “no” to what you wanted, in order to say “yes” to what you needed.
When Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, He is asking us to say “no” to ourselves so we can say “yes” to God.
As we saw in Matthew 16 yesterday, Peter is trying to put his own will into action rather than seeking what God has in mind. I wonder how many of us have been trying to follow Jesus while still feeding our own selfish desires?
This is why Jesus says to be “in the world but not of the world”. The difference in these two positions has to do with where we glance vs. where we gaze. Today, ask God to help you fix your gaze upon Him, while simply glancing at the things of the world.

The world around us is full of avenues that will promise temporary satisfaction. The truth is, only the way of Jesus Christ can fulfill us eternally. But how do we learn to fix our gaze on Jesus, while glancing at the world? Or, as Jesus puts it, how do we be in the world but not of it? Get ready to have your world rocked over the next 7 days!
