Η Α΄ Επιστολή Ιωάννου είναι μια καθολική επιστολή, κάτι δηλαδή σαν εγκύκλιος ανάμεσα σε πολλές εκκλησίες πιστών αδελφών. Ο τόνος της Επιστολής είναι μειλίχιος όταν απευθύνεται στους αναγνώστες που ο συγγραφέας τούς αποκαλεί «παιδιά μου» αλλά συγχρόνως είναι και πολύ σκληρός εναντίον των ψευδοδιδασκάλων. Σκοπός της είναι να θυμίσει στους πιστούς ότι μπορούν να είναι απόλυτα σίγουροι για τις αλήθειες του ευαγγελίου, και να έχουν εμπιστοσύνη σ’ αυτές.
