Jesus Christ was known as the “Word” because He was the physical representation of the spoken Word of God. J. C. Ryle explained that calling Jesus “the Word” means He is the expression of God’s mind to humanity. Just like God’s Word teaches us about the invisible God, Jesus Christ also reveals the character of the invisible God.
He didn’t just bring a message; He is the message—God loves us and wants to save us from sin and hell. Jesus also demonstrated in His life what we ought to strive for in our own lives, loving God and loving people.
As you study God’s Word, ask yourself, “What does this passage teach me about God’s character?”
