In order for a grapevine to grow properly, a farmer must prune off branches that are not doing any good. Farmers generally snip unhealthy branches right where they meet the vine. The severed branches on the ground continue to look lush and green for a day or so, but eventually they shrivel up and die. Even though they may be on the ground near the vine, the fact that the branch is no longer attached causes them to wither away.
In John 15, Jesus tells us that we are exactly like those dying branches. The Bible says, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
How do we abide in Him? Jesus tells us that, too: “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.”
